LATINO LEADERSHIP PROJECT
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
It is our mission to
be a unifying force in the community that will empower the Latino group
to: Achieve a higher education. Obtain and sustain access to fair
housing. Be properly represented by the decision-making groups of
our government. Obtain the recognition the Latino community
deserves in the American society.
Immigrant populations have typically had difficulty
being accepted by and adjusting to the communities in which they
resettle. This is true for the growing Latino population in general, and
specifically north Cook and Lake County Communities. Conservatively, the
2000 census demonstrated huge increases in Latin country immigrants.
From 1990 – 2000, when the total population grew 25% in Lake County,
Latino/Hispanic population grew 140%. By 2000 Latinos represented 14.5%
of the total population, out stripping all other group. (The next
largest was African Americans, who grew by 35% during the same period.
Twelve Lake County communities reported at least a 5% increase and five
20 % or more increase. Similarly in North Cook County, by 2000 Latinos
made up 21% of Wheeling and 14 % of Palatine population.
This continuing trend represent a needs that demand
attention. The Latino residents are becoming a very significant segment
of the fabric of this country - our communities, our work force, our
culture, and our future. We must create and develop
structures/organizations that respond to and represent the needs of this
immigrant (particularly 1st and 2nd generation)
population.
