History
Metropolitan Chicago ranks third in the nation in the number of Latino
residents. Between 1970 and 2004 the Latino population of metropolitan
Chicago increased from slightly less than 325,000 to more than 1.6
million. For many years the region’s Latinos were primarily
concentrated in the city, but since the 1980’s the Latino population has
been growing faster in the suburbs than in the city. Latinos now
represent approximately 18% of the population of Lake County residents.
A 2005 study, The State of Latino Chicago, published by
the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame,
indicates that only 26% of all US-born and 9% of foreign-born Latinos
(ages 25-34) have completed college. These levels of educational
attainment are far lower than those of either Latino White or Black
residents of the area.
